The Implication of the ERA to the Violence Against Women Act

The Implication of the ERA to the Violence Against Women Act

Primary to being an ally for female empowerment is being aware of issues that affect or relate to the advancement of the movement. Aside from delving into history to explain the underpinnings of the cause, it is also crucial that we educate ourselves about how today’s legislations and their amendment can affect landmark women initiatives.

Among the most enduring of these legislations is the push for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), a proposed amendment to the US Constitution that seeks an explicit affirmation and guarantee of equal legal rights among all American citizens, regardless of gender.

As a nonprofit organization in Atlanta, Georgia geared at empowering today’s women into becoming successful leaders, we at see information dissemination to be part of our mandate. Thus, for this entry, we are discussing the effect of passing the Equal Rights Amendment on the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), landmark legislation crucial in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV).

In brief, its most significant implication lies in its ability to bolster the Violence Against Women Act and its provisions, thus giving women expanded protections and the legal fortifications they need. For instance, with ERA ratified, preceding provisions struck down by the Supreme Court, can be reexamined and restored.

Of course, along with educating ourselves, we must not forget to walk the talk. Supporting a mentorship program in Georgia like the one we have, for instance, is one of the surest ways we can do so.

Engaging in funding education programs and other education-focused initiatives is also an effective way to make sure that awareness and information remain to be the backbone of our efforts.
